Structured Catalysts for Non-Thermal Plasma-Assisted Ammonia Synthesis

Ammonia has been intensively studied as a clean, sustainable fuel source and an efficient energy storage medium due to its effectiveness hydrogen carrier molecule. However, the currently used Haber–Bosch process requires large fossil input, high temperatures pressures, well significant capital investment. These constraints prevent decentralized small-scale ammonia production at level of small farms local communities. Non-thermal plasma (NTP) can promote synthesis in operating conditions which, conventional process, catalyst is generally not active. In this study, NTP-assisted catalytic milder ambient pressure was investigated. Four different structured catalysts were prepared tested using experimental plant based on dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) reactor. The effect gas hourly space velocity (GHSV) investigated, N2/H2 ratio performance. results evidenced that best activity (about 4 mmol h−1 produced NH3) obtained 10Ni/zeolite 13X sample with lowest consumption, thus highlighting feasibility innovative technology field.
